What happens when Flower bets.

Wow, I can't believe it's been two weeks since my last post.

I suppose I should explain how I ended up coaching for the BC Rollers. It's fairly simple- I lost a bet. Rusty Nailher and I were playing cards after her bout against the Nurse Ratchets and she decided that we needed to made the game more interesting. So we pitted booty shorts vs coaching (Rusty wins = I coach a practice, I win = Rusty wears booty shorts for the Albany bout) and the game was on. Obviously, Rusty ended up winning.

Last week, Rusty decided that Guitar Hero needed to be made more interesting. Again, we bet booty shorts vs coaching. I lost to Rusty... again. So this past Sunday found me trekking straight from CCR's FreshMeat practice to Binghamton's practice.

After practice we visited a local watering hole for "one drink". (Hah!) After everyone arrived and things settled down (somehow I ended up with three beverages?!?!) Rusty started feeding bills into the "Big Buck Hunter" arcade game. Now this was something I stood a chance in, so I hollered my challenge over to Rusty. Yep, you guessed it- booty shorts vs coaching. We decided this one had to be the best two out of three games. Game one went to Rusty, game two went to me. After bantering and attempts at distractions on both sides; game three went to... ME!!!
RUSTY'S WEARING BOOTY SHORTS ON SATURDAY!!!!!

Since no one would take on the winner for another round of "Big Buck Hunter", we made our way out to the dance floor and pool table. Did someone say pool? Uh-huh... another bet with Rusty. Then on to arm-wrestling. Let's just sum it all up by saying that I now owe Rusty two coaching sessions.

On the plus side, here's a pre-view of our bout-fits for this weekend:

The noose is back!

I'd like to give a HUGE shout-out to the BC Rollers. After almost exactly a year and eight months, I finally pulled out the coaching whistle as an honest-to-goodness coach again.

It's been entirely too long since I sat down and pondered the needs of a team and its skaters from an outside perspective. Creating the day's practice plan is a journey that I love to take- meandering through skills and drills in my mind, deciding which twists and turns to follow as the plan slowly shape like a map laid out before me. There are favorite sites along every route that simply must not be missed and other sites that can only be visited once or twice before they're old news. Finding the balance between taking time to enjoy the local culture and moving quickly through on our way to bigger, better things is always a challenge.

Some days everyone is on the bus and ready to rumble like a well-oiled machine, complete with a punctual departure and plenty of on-board entertainment. Other days, the bus breaks down and everyone has to pitch in to get to the team's destination. That can mean tough choices and sometimes includes unpleasant compromises. It can also result in some awesome stories as obstacles are overcome. Knowing the lay of the land and the resources that you've brought along with you is vital to being able to respond smoothly to any changes along the route.

Last night's practice was a trip through mostly familiar stomping grounds for this tour guide. We took a few side trips to visit both old and new areas, letting new travelers take in the sights and sounds around them as their more traveled companions got a chance to see things with fresh perspective. More than once the group was let loose to explore a new concept thoroughly in their own way and at their own pace; many bringing new insights back with them.

The night's destination was ultimately and simply; Communication. The BBC Rollers are scheduled to bout against Albany's B-Team in a little more than two weeks and has no shortage of team spirit. Taking that existing team spirit and pushing it to the next level with the use of effective communication will hopefully help the league hold its collective head up proudly on Dec 3rd; no matter which way the ruling for Rule 2.2.2 falls.

So as last evening's tour guide for the BCC Rollers, I hope everyone enjoyed the trip and that I'll see you again soon! (And for those whose bus I wasn't traveling on- I'm excited to find out where your evening's route took you!)

This, that, and the other.

Well, Halloween blew by before I knew it.

I met my parents near the farm on the 29th and we went on to Pike where the RRRG Nurse Rachets were playing New Hampshire's Blazing Betties. The Betties drew from ~4 teams to make a 9(?) skater roster, including 3 skaters from BC Roller's Parlor City Tricks (I never did write about the State College bout, did I?). Delicate Mother and I NSO'd in the penalty box. Delicate Mother has NSO'd with me in the penalty box before, so she's a semi-old hand at it. (She heard Elvis Refley ask me if I'd NSO last summer at the first bout she came to and she promptly volunteered herself. Obviously, she had NO idea what was going on, so I told Elvis he had two NSO's if he could put us somewhere together. We've NSO'd in the penalty box together since then whenever possible.)

Each time I NSO in the box, I learn something new. This time, it was the importance of a well-marked penalty box. Each team ended up with jammers having to serve an extra minute due to leaving the box when they were told "stand" (rather than at the appropriate "done" cue). I'm pretty sure there's video of me yelling at one jammer (probably both, actually) to sit back down and that they'd just earned another minute of penalty time.

The video also includes a moment of roof footage. The penalty box was situated on an outside curve and I had the seat closest to the skaters, with Delicate Mother on the far side and the sound system beyond her. The pack was coming down the straight-away when I realized that there was a body sliding along the floor on the OUTSIDE of the track. The trajectory of the skater's slide included the front leg of the video tripod and ended with... me. Thankfully the videographer pulled the camera back just in time for Rusty Nailher (aka BC Roller's coach/captain) to slip under the leg of the tripod and then Rusty twisted so that she grabbed the penalty box chairs in front of me, almost face-planting herself on them in the process. A grin at me, and Rusty was gone.

Brain's gone zombie, so that's all for now!

Mask photos!

Browsing dah interwebs this morning brought me to Jacob Cornelius's flickr page here where there are some awesome shots from the 9/10 Bluestockings vs CCR bout and Bluestockings vs Hudson Valley Horrors zomBsquad on 10/1.

16 random thoughts

1) To my brain, MRDA looks like MRSA. Unfortunate abbreviation similarity, guys.

2) If I'd been a better sorority girl in college, I would understand physics better right now.

3) Porkchop and Sloppy Joe are heading to the freezer in two days. Two days until silence. Sweet sweet silence...

4) My kneepads don't hold the favor of the Velcro gods anymore. I think I have to face the prospect of new gear. I hate getting new gear. I swear I'm going to skate on my current wheels until all I've got left is the core. Did I mention I hate getting new gear?

5) Purple is the new Blue. Dang it, that means replacing my booty shorts.

6) I've got Skeeter's socks!

7) I feel naked without my cell phone.

8) Broken, bloody noses suck. Guess it's not time to put away the mask quite yet.

9) My future is looking extra cheesy.

10) Don't get into a sewing zone while the dog is loose in the house.

11) Driving to practice is better with a buddy. Driving to practice with a buddy who is also feeling guilt-free about another evening spent away from the husband is 10,000x better.

12) Clean your bearings!

13) Be extra-nice to cops and EMT's. You never know when they'll be needed.

14) It's all about perspective.

15) Skate like the devil's on your tail. Sometimes sneaky and smart is better than fast and straightforward.

16) Dance like nobody's watching.

Rainbow Might makes the news! And shoe(laces)!

Keuka College produced an article on Rainbow Might, skater for the Ithaca Bluestockings. Pics are from the Bluestockings vs Royal Pains bout at Cass on 9/10/11. Article is here.

Ian's Shoelace Site for anyone who's having trouble figuring out their skate lacing.

Rusty NailHer and the rest of the Parlor City Tricks crew came up for scrimmage practice at Betty on Tuesday. Much fun, and my apologies to Elvis Refley for forcing slow derby on him!

It's probably a good thing Rusty NailHer brought my shirt to practice so I had time to take it in for Saturday's bout. Seam rippers + elastic = drastically altered shirt appearance. So much for just running a couple of seams down the sides! Now, to figure out my bottom half of my boutfit...

Travelin' gal

Guess who's playing this Saturday with the BC Rollers during their very first bout ever?! THIS KID!!

I'm super excited to get to see the BC gals again during scrimmage practice with CCR tomorrow night. The Bluestockings played against some of the BC skaters during the Oz Tournament in June. Unfortunately that bout ended in a forfeit after injuries and penalties shortened the bench to just 4 skaters. This new league still has a very short roster, so I'll be lending my skates to the cause as the BC Rollers face off against the State College Area Rollers' Happy Valley Dolls. Now that my muscles aren't screaming in agony after Thursday's endurance practice, I can look forward to jam, jam, jamming!!

Do you think my pink skirt will match this shirt?

Sore muscles and fall chores

Saturday and Sunday both turned out a little more exciting than I'd planned. A little, not much. (Thankfully)

Saturday plan:
Rise early for chicken slaughtering @ friend's, taking 2 roosters along.
Meet husband/in-laws for lunch after finishing chicken processing.
Acupuncture appointment with the lovely Aileen Boyd.
Friends of the Library booksale.
Outdoor skate.
Bonfire.

Sunday plan:
Be lazy.

Actual Saturday events:
Late rise and departure for chicken slaughtering, taking all 3 known bantam roosters rather than the expected 2.

Constantly forgetting that the roosters were in a pet carrier in the back of the car made for some interesting moments when I realized that the thumping from the back was not my outdoor skates rolling around, but rather the birds re-settling themselves. They did not crow at all for the first 40 minutes of the trip, so that made it easy to forget they were there. When the crowing started up it was much more difficult to forget! It's a tad bit heart-stopping to suddenly have a rooster go into full crow in an enclosed space, especially after complete silence.

My late arrival meant that the chickens were not done before I had to leave for lunch. :-( All birds were fully plucked and ~1/3 bagged and cooling when I left.

Lunch concluded, I head on over for pokey fun. We decide that the sunshine is too precious to give up, so we set up outside on the porch. Sitting on a low stool with my knees soon full of needles, the sun and fresh air definitely feel good. After just two treatments, I'd lost the majority of the swelling and pain I've had for the past 8 years. I'd also regained much of the feeling I'd lost. I'll live with needles in weird places for a few minutes if it means I can finally be pain and swelling-free!

After the acupuncture appointment is done, I head on over to the Friends of the Library booksale. While completing a k-turn to park, I heard a very loud "CRUNCH" through the open window. Much swearing as I realize that I'd hit the front corner of a Subaru with the rear corner of my car, setting the dogs off inside. I get out and examine both vehicles, finding minor scratches on their bumper and a dented panel or two on my car along with scratches. *sigh* Start to write a note when the owner shows up with his bag of books from the sale and I explain what had happened. We exchange contact info. Eventually I head on in to the sale.(The book sale has got to be one of the most dangerous places to park in town with so many cars navigating the narrow streets around the FOTL warehouse!)

Receive text from friend saying they're heading over to skate. I finish browsing the aisles and finally manage to drag myself away with two bags full of books and sewing patterns (Stuffed animals for the niece and nephew!!). I will have to return during bag days with specific titles/authors in mind or I'll never get out of there.

Gear up and start skating laps, adding people each lap. I quit three quarters of the way through the first "fast" lap when my body strongly protested the unusual treatment. (My muscles are STILL sore from Thursday's practice!)

Head up the hill to the bonfire. Stay much later than expected. Many kudos to the host and hostess for throwing a great shin-dig.

Sunday morning I sleep through all feline protests of starvation and neglect, along with the pitter-patter of the excited pup's claws on the hardwood floors as she goes through her morning routine. Porkchop is quiet in his pen along with Goat, Serif and Sloppy Joe. If there is a rooster remaining in the flock, he's keeping quiet. The hens are quiet as well.

Eventually I make movements that indicate life still exists and Delicate Hubby asks if I'm interested in going to a gun show with him. I say "Sure" and we start making our way over to the show. After much distracted navigation, I eventually lead him to the proper building.

It turns out to be a small show. A cheese seller there has blocks of bacon cheddar, so once the gun show exhausts my interest (all of ~10 minutes) I head out to the car with a pound of bacon-flavored cheese and settle in with my textbook. That soon becomes a FOTL booksale book, which rapidly engrosses me when I discover that a friend's family is featured.

Back home. I start cleaning up the garden. Take down net trellises and pull up T-posts. Move stepping-stones of rocks and boards to the edge of the garden. Cut dead growth and use it to cover the perennials. I have a head of cauliflower that survived the goat/sheep's "help" in the garden. It's the first respectably sized head of cauliflower I've ever managed to produce and somehow I never noticed it amongst the celery and kohlrabi. This follows cucumber and broccoli for "first" times producing a vegetable. Pulling the wooden posts out of the garden reminded me yet again of my community plot 2 years ago, the produce of which was gorgeously photographed by a house-bound (and threatening to go stir-crazy) Kataclysm. :-)

While I worked in the garden, Delicate Hubby finished putting up the siding on our 12 foot x 12 foot goat/chicken/potting barn. (With Goat's help, of course. When she's not on the deck checking for dropped apples from apple processing.) After he'd gone back and forth along the building several times, I pointed out the single egg that was laying directly in front of the goat's door and along the main pathway. It was cold, so not super-fresh. Somehow both Delicate Hubby and the livestock had managed to avoid stepping on it in their numerous travels back and forth along the path.

Delicate Hubby eventually started to herd the sheep and goats back into the pen from their supervised lawn grazing. Soon I hear a "HELP!!" coming from inside the barn. Lesson of the day: Don't get between Goat and her grain. She will suddenly grow three feet in order to reach it.

Celebrating Slamboni

Last night I ventured out to "The Betty" and became, for the evening, Slamboni's favorite birthday present.  She wasn't able to join me on the track for CCR's practice but nevertheless, we both had a fantastic time by just being in the same space again.  We're both almost bursting with excitement while we tick down the days until we hit the ice for the 2011-2012 hockey season.  It's been too long since we've had sticks in our hands and skates with blades on our feet.

With several of Slamboni's teammates asking for help on specific topics, I just might have to return to Betty in the coming weeks to make sure we get those concerns addressed.  That, and Betty proved to be a whole new set of challenges for this roller girl.  Just when I thought I had finally tweaked my skates into perfection, Betty's unique floor threw a wrench into it all.  I'm on a quest now to "catch" Betty and understand her secrets.

Hello, World.

Welcome to my world.  It's full of skates, animals, hearth and home.  Usually too little sleep paired with too much to do.
